10 Benefits of Reading

Reading is one of the best hobbies a person can have. But it’s saddening to know that majority of us aren’t introduced to the fabulous world of books. If you are one of the non-book readers who feels you “don’t need no stinking books”, here are some reasons to start the habit…before you are left behind!

01. Reading is an active mental process:
Unlike sitting in front of the idiot box (TV), reading makes you use your brain. While reading you would be forced to reason out many things which are unfamiliar to you. In this process you would use the grey cells of your brain to think and become smarter.

02. Reading improves your vocabulary: Remember in elementary school when you learned how to infer the meaning of one word by reading the context of the other words in the sentence? You get the same benefit from book reading. While reading books, especially challenging ones, you will find yourself exposed to many new words you wouldn’t be otherwise.

03. Gives you a glimpse into other cultures and places of the world: How would you know about the life of people in Mexico if you don’t read about it? Reading gives you an insight into the diversity of ethnicity of people, their customs, their lifestyles etc. You become more aware about the different places and the code of conduct in those places.

04. Improves concentration and focus: It requires you to focus on what you are reading for long periods. Unlike magazines, Internet posts or e-Mails that might contain small chunks of information, books tell the whole story. Since you must concentrate in order to read, like a muscle, you will get better at concentration.

05. Builds self-esteem: The more you read, the more knowledgeable you become. With more knowledge comes more confidence. More confidence builds self-esteem. So it’s a chain reaction. Since you are so well read, people look to you for answers. Your feelings about yourself can only get better.

06. Improves memory: Many studies show if you don’t use your memory, you lose it. Crossword puzzles are an example of a word game that staves off Alzheimer’s. Reading, although not a game, helps you stretch your memory muscles in a similar way. Reading requires remembering details, facts and figures and in literature, plot lines, themes and characters.

07. Improves your discipline: Making time to read is something we all know we should do, but who schedules book reading time every day? Very few… That’s why adding book reading to your daily schedule and sticking to it, improves discipline.

08. Improves creativity: Reading about diversity of life and exposing yourself to new ideas and more information helps to develop the creative side of the brain as it imbibes innovation into your thinking process.

09. You always have something to talk about: Have you ever found yourself in an embarrassing situation where you didn’t have anything to talk about? Did you hate yourself for making a fool of yourself? Do you want a remedy for this? It’s simple. Start reading. Reading widens your horizon of information. You’ll always have something to talk about. You can discuss various plots in the novels you read, you can discuss the stuff you are learning in the business books you are reading as well. The possibilities of sharing become endless.

10. Reduces boredom: One of the rules I have is if I am feeling bored, I will pick up a book and start reading. What I’ve found by sticking to this is that I become interested in the book’s subject and stop being bored. I mean, if you’re bored anyway, you might as well be reading a good book, right?

If you want to break the monotony of a lazy, uncreative and boring life, go and grab an interesting book. Turn the pages to explore a new world filled with information and ingenuity.

10 Secrets for Instant Self-Confidence

There are lots of ways to improve your self-confidence over the long-term – but sometimes you need an instant boost. You can’t walk into an important work meeting, (or a class at college or a room full of strangers at a party) whilst frantically re-reading a self-help manual, or making a last-minute phone call to your life-coach. So here are ten secrets to boosting your self-confidence in just a few seconds…

10 Secrets for Instant Self-Confidence

1. Smile: The one-second tip for when you’re feeling nervous and unconfident is simply to smile! You don’t just smile because you are happy and confident – you can smile to make yourself feel better. The act of smiling is so strongly associated with positive feelings that it’s almost impossible to feel bad while smiling.

2. Make eye contact:
As well as smiling, meet the eyes of other people in the room. Give them your smile; you’ll almost certainly get one back, and being smiled at is a great self-confidence boost. Like smiling, eye contact shows people that you’re confident. Staring at your shoes or at the table reinforces your feelings of self-doubt and shyness.

3. Change your inner voice:
Most of us have a critical inner voice that tells us we’re stupid, not good enough, that we’re too fat, thin, loud, quiet… Being able to change that inner voice is key to feeling self-confident on the inside, which will help you project your confidence to the world. Make your inner voice a supportive friend who knows you fully but also recognizes your talents and gifts, and wants you to make the best of yourself.

4. Forget other people’s standards: Whatever the situation that’s causing you a crisis of self-confidence, you can help yourself immeasurably by holding yourself to your own standards alone. Other people have different values from you, and however hard you try, you’ll never please everyone all of the time. Don’t worry that people will think you’re too overweight, underweight, too feckless, too boring, too frugal, too frivolous … hold yourself to your standards, not some imagined standards belonging to others. And remember that commonly-held values and standards vary from society to society: you don’t have to accept them just because the people around you do.

5. Make the most of your appearance:
Even if you’ve only got a minute or two, duck into the bathroom to make sure you’re looking your best. Brushing your hair, giving your face a good wash, retouching your makeup, straightening your collar, checking you’ve not got a bit of parsley stuck between your teeth … all of these can make the difference between feeling confident in your physical appearance and feeling anxious about an imagined flaw.

6. Pray or meditate briefly: If you believe in a higher power, whether God, or another spiritual force, it can be a real boost to self-confidence to say a silent prayer. (You could also meditate instead of praying.) This helps you to take a step back from your immediate situation, to see the wider picture and to seek help from something or someone greater than yourself. This is a Christian prayer, but you could write something similar that fits your own religious beliefs or spiritual tradition.

7. Re frame:
If something unexpected happens, it’s easy to let it knock your fledgling self-confidence. Perhaps you spill your drink on someone, you arrive late for the big meeting because of traffic problems, or someone who you wanted to speak to gives you a cold brush-off. Try to “re frame” the situation; put it in the best possible light: often, events are only negative because of the meaning we attach to them.

8. Find the next step: Keep your self-confidence up by taking gradual steps forwards, rather than freezing when faced with what seems like a giant leap. If you’re not sure what to do, look for one simple step that you can take to make progress. That might mean making eye contact at a party, introducing yourself to a stranger, breaking the ice in a meeting, or asking a question of your interviewers that shows your knowledge of their industry and company.

9. Speak slowly: An easy tip for both seeming and being more self-confidence is to speak slowly. If you gabble, you’ll end up feeling worse as you know you’re being unclear to your audience or to the person you’re in a conversation with. Speaking slowly gives you the chance to think about what you’re going to say next. If you’re giving a talk or presentation, pause at the end of phrases and sentences to help your audience take in what you’ve said.

10. Contribute something: Have you ever sat through an entire class at college or meeting at work without saying a word? Have you had an evening out where friends chatted happily while you sat and stared silently at your drink? Chances are, you weren’t feeling very self-confident at the time – and you probably felt even worse afterwards. Whatever the situation you’re in, make an effort to contribute. Even if you don’t think you have much to say, your thoughts and perspective are valuable to those around you.

Why we should use the email?

Easy to use: E-mail frees us from the tedious task of managing data of daily use. It helps us to manage our contacts, send mails quickly, maintain our mail history, store the required information, etc.

Speed: The e-mail is delivered instantly, anywhere across the globe. No other service matches the e-mail in terms of speed.

Easy to prioritize: Since the mails have subject lines, it is easy to prioritize them and ignore unwanted mails.

Reliable and secure: Constant efforts are being taken to improve the security in electronic mails. Thus making it one of the secured ways of communication.

Informal and conversational: The language used in e-mails is generally simple and thus makes the communication informal. Sending and receiving e-mails takes less time, so it can be used as a tool for interaction.

Easier for reference: When one needs to reply to a mail, there is a provision in the mailing system to attach the previous mails as references. This refreshes the recipient's knowledge, on what he is reading.

Automated e-mails: It is possible to send automated e-mails using special programs like the auto responders. The auto responders reply back to the sender with generalized pre-written text messages.

Environment friendly: Postal mails use paper as a medium to send letters. Electronic mail thus, saves a lot of trees from being axed. It also saves fuel needed in transportation.

Use of graphics: Colorful greeting cards and interesting pictures can be sent through e-mails. This adds value to the e-mail service.

Advertising tool: You can use the email as advertising tools.

10 Ways to Instantly Build Self Confidence

Self confidence is the difference between feeling unstoppable and feeling scared out of your wits. Your perception of yourself has an enormous impact on how others perceive you. Perception is reality — the more self confidence you have, the more likely it is you’ll succeed.

Although many of the factors affecting self confidence are beyond your control, there are a number of things you can consciously do to build self confidence. By using these 10 strategies you can get the mental edge you need to reach your potential.

Build Self Confidence

1. Dress Sharp: Although clothes don’t make the man, they certainly affect the way he feels about himself. No one is more conscious of your physical appearance than you are. When you don’t look good, it changes the way you carry yourself and interact with other people. Use this to your advantage by taking care of your personal appearance. In most cases, significant improvements can be made by bathing and shaving frequently, wearing clean clothes, and being cognizant of the latest styles.

This doesn’t mean you need to spend a lot on clothes. One great rule to follow is “spend twice as much, buy half as much”. Rather than buying a bunch of cheap clothes, buy half as many select, high quality items. In long run this decreases spending because expensive clothes wear out less easily and stay in style longer than cheap clothes. Buying less also helps reduce the clutter in your closet.

2. Walk Faster:
One of the easiest ways to tell how a person feels about herself is to examine her walk. Is it slow? tired? painful? Or is it energetic and purposeful? People with confidence walk quickly. They have places to go, people to see, and important work to do. Even if you aren’t in a hurry, you can increase your self confidence by putting some pep in your step. Walking 25% faster will make to you look and feel more important.

3. Good Posture:
Similarly, the way a person carries herself tells a story. People with slumped shoulders and lethargic movements display a lack of self confidence. They aren’t enthusiastic about what they’re doing and they don’t consider themselves important. By practicing good posture, you’ll automatically feel more confident. Stand up straight, keep your head up, and make eye contact. You’ll make a positive impression on others and instantly feel more alert and empowered.

4. Personal Commercial: One of the best ways to build confidence is listening to a motivational speech. Unfortunately, opportunities to listen to a great speaker are few and far between. You can fill this need by creating a personal commercial. Write a 30-60 second speech that highlights your strengths and goals. Then recite it in front of the mirror aloud (or inside your head if you prefer) whenever you need a confidence boost.

5. Gratitude: When you focus too much on what you want, the mind creates reasons why you can’t have it. This leads you to dwell on your weaknesses. The best way to avoid this is consciously focusing on gratitude. Set aside time each day to mentally list everything you have to be grateful for. Recall your past successes, unique skills, loving relationships, and positive momentum. You’ll be amazed how much you have going for you and motivated to take that next step towards success.

6. Compliment other people: When we think negatively about ourselves, we often project that feeling on to others in the form of insults and gossip. To break this cycle of negativity, get in the habit of praising other people. Refuse to engage in backstabbing gossip and make an effort to compliment those around you. In the process, you’ll become well liked and build self confidence. By looking for the best in others, you indirectly bring out the best in yourself.

7. Sit in the front row: In schools, offices, and public assemblies around the world, people constantly strive to sit at the back of the room. Most people prefer the back because they’re afraid of being noticed. This reflects a lack of self confidence. By deciding to sit in the front row, you can get over this irrational fear and build your self confidence. You’ll also be more visible to the important people talking from the front of the room.

8. Speak up: During group discussions many people never speak up because they’re afraid that people will judge them for saying something stupid. This fear isn’t really justified. Generally, people are much more accepting than we imagine. In fact most people are dealing with the exact same fears. By making an effort to speak up at least once in every group discussion, you’ll become a better public speaker, more confident in your own thoughts, and recognized as a leader by your peers.

9. Work out: Along the same lines as personal appearance, physical fitness has a huge effect on self confidence. If you’re out of shape, you’ll feel insecure, unattractive, and less energetic. By working out, you improve your physcial appearance, energize yourself, and accomplish something positive. Having the discipline to work out not only makes you feel better, it creates positive momentum that you can build on the rest of the day.

10. Focus on contribution: Too often we get caught up in our own desires. We focus too much on ourselves and not enough on the needs of other people. If you stop thinking about yourself and concentrate on the contribution you’re making to the rest of the world, you won’t worry as much about you own flaws. This will increase self confidence and allow you to contribute with maximum efficiency. The more you contribute to the world the more you’ll be rewarded with personal success and recognition.

5 Simple Ways to Increase Your Intelligence

Your brain needs exercise just like a muscle. If you use it often and in the right ways, you will become a more skilled thinker and increase your ability to focus. But if you never use your brain, or abuse it with harmful chemicals, your ability to think and learn will deteriorate.

Here are 5 simple ways anyone can squeeze a bit more productivity out of the old gray matter.

1. Minimize Television Watching: This is a hard sell. People love vegetating in front of the television, myself included more often than I’d like. The problem is watching television doesn’t use your mental capacity OR allow it to recharge. It’s like having the energy sapped out of a muscle without the health benefits of exercise.

Don’t you feel drained after a couple hours of TV? Your eyes are sore and tired from being focused on the light box for so long. You don’t even have the energy to read a book.

When you feel like relaxing, try reading a book instead. If you’re too tired, listen to some music. When you’re with your friends or family, leave the tube off and have a conversation. All of these things use your mind more than television and allow you to relax.

2. Exercise: I used to think that I’d learn more by not exercising and using the time to read a book instead. But I realized that time spent exercising always leads to greater learning because it improves productivity during the time afterwards. Using your body clears your head and creates a wave of energy. Afterwards, you feel invigorated and can concentrate more easily.

3. Read Challenging Books: Many people like to read popular suspense fiction, but generally these books aren’t mentally stimulating. If you want to improve your thinking and writing ability you should read books that make you focus. Reading a classic novel can change your view of the world and will make you think in more precise, elegant English. Don’t be afraid to look up a word if you don’t know it, and don’t be afraid of dense passages. Take your time, re-read when necessary, and you’ll soon grow accustomed to the author’s style.

Once you get used to reading challenging books, I think you’ll find that you aren’t tempted to go back to page-turners. The challenge of learning new ideas is far more exciting than any tacky suspense-thriller.

4. Early to Bed, Early to Rise: Nothing makes it harder to concentrate than sleep deprivation. You’ll be most rejuvenated if you go to bed early and don’t sleep more than 8 hours. If you stay up late and compensate by sleeping late, you’ll wake up lethargic and have trouble focusing. In my experience the early morning hours are the most tranquil and productive. Waking up early gives you more productive hours and maximizes your mental acuity all day.

If you have the opportunity, take 10-20 minute naps when you are hit with a wave of drowsiness. Anything longer will make you lethargic, but a short nap will refresh you.

5. Take Time to Reflect: Often our lives get so hectic that we become overwhelmed without even realizing it. It becomes difficult to concentrate because nagging thoughts keep interrupting. Spending some time alone in reflection gives you a chance organize your thoughts and prioritize your responsibilities. Afterwards, you’ll have a better understanding of what’s important and what isn’t. The unimportant stuff won’t bother you anymore and your mind will feel less encumbered.

I’m not saying you need to sit on the floor cross-legged and chant ‘ommm’. Anything that allows a bit of prolonged solitude will do. One of my personal favorites is taking a solitary walk. Someone famous said, “All the best ideas occur while walking.” I think he was on to something. Experiment to find the activity that works best for you.

Conclusion: I hope you aren’t disappointed that none of the techniques I’ve proposed are revolutionary. But simple, unexciting answers are often the most valid. The challenge is having the will to adhere to them. If you succeed in following these 5 tips, you’ll be rewarded with increased mental acuity and retention of knowledge.

10 Ways To Serve Your Country

The phrase “serve your country” is now commonly understood to mean military service. This phrase is very misleading and is used by those who want to attract new recruits to the military. There are many other better ways to “serve your country” while not putting yourself “in harm’s way” - another favorite term frequently tossed about by government officials and the mindless media.

1. Vote: If you live in a democracy it is your right and your duty to vote. Pay attention to the issues, ensure you are registered to vote, and vote. Don’t take this right and duty lightly. The majority of the six billion people on this planet don’t have this right, and people die every day fighting for it. When you vote you make your democracy stronger.

2. Get an education: This is not only for young people. Everyone can learn something and the more you know the more you are able to contribute to society. A better education helps you to get a better job, make more money and take better care of yourself and your family, and when you do this you are making your country better.
A few years ago I told a nephew that the best way to serve his country was to stay in school, go to college, get a good job, pay his taxes and buy a nice car. And he would get a lot of girls. I think that got his attention.

3. Learn to manage your finances:
Whatever your age, start saving. Get your expenses under control, get out of debt as soon as possible and save as much as you can. Go to the library and borrow some books and learn about investments. Don’t depend on the government to take care of you in your old age. The government is broke. The government has no money. It gets it from you, the taxpayer. Social security is the biggest Ponzi scheme there is. You will have to take care of yourself and your loved ones. You can count on it. So be financially self-sufficient and do not be a burden on your country.

4. Spend time with your children: If you have children, spend as much time as possible with them. The time you spend with them, loving them and teaching them, will pay great dividends in the future. Don’t be too quick to hand your children over to daycares and babysitters. They are not the best and can never replace a parent’s love and care. Talk to your children, listen to them, play with them, read to them and generally be there for them. If you do this you will be creating great citizens for your country.

5. Go to church: Whatever your religion, if you haven’t been attending church, mosque or temple, begin. One of the best things I did for myself, my family and my children was to attend church almost every Sunday, and to take my children to Sunday school. You’ll meet some of the best and nicest people at church, and your children will learn difference between right and wrong from someone other than you. Just be certain to avoid the fringe or fanatical groups.

6. Volunteer: There are many great organizations which need a helping hand. Do what you can without sacrificing time with your family and loved ones. Without volunteers, a lot of beneficial work will be left undone in our communities. I volunteered at my church, for my professional organization, for my son’s hockey and little league teams, and for my condo board of directors. I had the most fun with the hockey team.

7. Give: Give whatever you can to causes close to your heart. Choose carefully to ensure that your money will be used wisely and for the purpose for which you gave. The larger charities have huge overheads so you may want to do your research before you write your check.
There is also a spiritual aspect to giving. All religions encourage it and when you include donations in your budgeting it adds another level of helpful financial discipline. Many services in your community depend on charitable donations which are used to help the needy. We cannot live for ourselves alone.

8. Take action: As a young man I read a book titled “You Can Change The World”. This book had a great impact on me. There are many books with that title now, but the basic principle remains the same. One person can make a huge difference. Instead of complaining about the government, or the large corporations or city hall, call the company’s head office, call your political representative, email the mayor or write a letter. One persistent individual can accomplish much.

9. Support Farmers: Regardless of the amount of money you have in the bank, the number of gold bars in the bank vault, the magnificence of your mansions or the number of luxury vehicles in your garage, you have to eat, and it’s farmers who produce the food for your table. We lose sight of this basic fact because most our food comes neatly packaged. Without farmers there would be nothing to package.

10. Care for your environment: Our very existence as humans depends on a healthy environment. The rapacious banks and multi-national corporations couldn’t care less about our environment. The BP oil disaster probably irreparably damaged the Gulf of Mexico, and the “development” of the Alberta tar sands has the potential to create an unmitigated environmental disaster which future generations will struggle to reverse. These are just two examples of the damage being done by Big Oil.

Do what you can in your community and join with others to bring pressure to bear at the political level. It’s a start and it’s better than doing nothing.

These are my ideas of what we can do to serve our country other than joining the military. I know that we cannot do every one of these, but we can start with one and go from there. Whatever positive action you take will have an impact for the better, and benefit us all.

How to Love Your Country

It's always good to love your country. After all, it's where you live. Here are some tips that can help you discover how great your country really and truly is!

Steps

01.  Be an active citizen: Actively demonstrate your love for your country by being part of its political process. Continually strive for a better
      country for all!
02. Study the history of your country: What are some of the great things people have done and how they showed their love of their country?
What are some of the things people have done with good intentions but poor results? Learn from your country's history -- both the good times
      and the bad times.
03. Focus on current events: For example, focus on what is also going on in the world as a whole and how your country is involved in it as well.
04. Read stories, tall tales, and patriotic legends of your country: You will be amazed with such the creativity and imagination of those who wrote
     or thought up them.
05. Have a hero: Someone who represents your country and is a good role model for you will make you proud to be where you call home.
06. Wear patriotic colors: Nothing shows you love your country more than showing it through clothing or accessories!
07. Fly a flag: You can purchase flags, bumper stickers, or any other emblems at a local store. Hang them on your car, your front lawn, or
anywhere that can outwardly show you respect your country. Remember to treat the flag with the utmost respect.
08. Celebrate holidays: What happened in your country on this day in history? Did they win a war? Did they gain independence? Recognize that
holidays are much more than just occasions for parties or, in some countries, sales at department stores. Acknowledge the solemnity
inherent   to  certain holidays, especially those that commemorate a victory that involved bloodshed.

Importance of Sleep – Health and Well Being

“Early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise”. This is a famous quote that tells us of the importance of sleep. It tells us that if we have the right number of sleep we will be healthy and our mind and body will work efficiently.

Everyone has his own sleeping habits but one thing is clear to us, we cannot do without sleep. The importance of sleep is as much our concern as the importance of clean living. Sleep is as important to us as the air we breathe. We cannot do without sleep.

Why is sleep important? Let us try to go over the importance of sleep:

 01.  Our bodies get revitalized when we get enough sleep. It is during sleep that our minds evaluate the things we have absorbed during the
day.  This  also gives our body and mind time to relax.

02.  Getting enough sleep enables us to build up our resistance to bodily and mental stress. It helps us to keep focus on what we do.

03.  Lacking in sleep may cause changes in our moods and disposition. Usually people who lack sleep are easily agitated.

04.  Lack of sleep can also affect our appetite causing us to either gain or lose weight. Most people who lack sleep put their health in danger.
There is more accumulation of carbohydrates and fats when one lacks sleep making one prone to weight gain.

05.  Lack of sleep can also affect our safety. When we lack sleep and go about doing our daily routine, we are putting ourselves in danger. Most
of those who lack sleep are not always at their best. They lack alertness and awareness of the things happening around them.
Usually accidents  and mishaps happen to people who lack sleep.

These are just some of the importance of sleep. In totality, sleep is very important to our health and well being. It is a need and not something that we can do without.
